Behold the Flying Cloud
The Flying Cloud was built in the late 19th Century by Donald McKay, who was responsible for constructing some of the world’s most successful clipper ships to have sailed the high seas. During the height of the Californian gold rush, a trip between New York and San Francisco took over 200 days, covering a distance of 16,000 miles. However, in 1851 the Flying Cloudmade the same journey in only 89 days and eight hours, a world record that was broken three years later, once again by the Flying Cloud. This unbelievable record remained intact for more than a century, until it was finally broken in 1989.
Another astounding fact, when one considers that this record was set in the 19th century, is that the Flying Cloud’s navigator was a woman by the name of Eleanor Creesy. Having studied ocean currents, weather phenomena and astronomy from when she was a young girl, Eleanor subsequently logged countless hours on the ocean after marrying a ship’s captain.
In 2007, Chartered Wealth Solutions founders John Campbell and Barclay Hoar came across the story of the Flying Cloud when a long standing client of theirs gave them a model ship – a replica of the Flying Cloud. It was a gift to express his gratitude for the work that Chartered Wealth Solutions had done for him, a thank you for helping him “charter his course into retirement”.
